Este mes en el grupo de fotografía La Vuelta al Mundo nos tocó hacer autorretratos, si señor. Y esta vez de verdad que sentí que aprendí mucho más y tuve tanta inspiración cada vez que sentía que no sabía que hacer.

This month's assignment on the photography group was Self-Portrait. I really learned a lot this time and felt I had so much inspiration from the group at times when I didn't know what to do.



Hay unas fotos IMPRESIONANTES en el grupo, vayan y deleitense los ojos, la creatividad de un autorretrato es ilimitada, eso lo aprendí. Yo siento que mis fotos son tan "normales", estoy contenta con mi resultado pero a la vez un poco incómoda de verme en fotos y un poco inconforme, quiero mejorar.

There are some AMAZING pictures over at the Group, go over and have a feast looking at so many creative self-portraits, there are unlimited ways to create one, I discovered! I feel that my pictures are kind of normal self-portraits, I'm happy with them but I am a little uncomfortable looking at myself so much in them and also a little unsatisfied, I want to improve.



Creo que a partir de aquí voy a seguir tomandome autorretratos porque me gustó mucho esta manera de aprender más fotografía y aprender a verse a uno mismo desde tantos ángulos. Uds ven algo más de mi a través de esta fotos que no conocían?

I think that after this exercercise I will keep taking self-portraits because I love how I learn more photography techniques and also I like how it teaches to look at you in a different way all the time. Did you see something in me that you haven't seen before?

El Mundo Maravilloso del Museo

Fuimos al LACMA (Museo de Arte del condado de Los Angeles) hace poco, ya habíamos ido antes un par de veces pero esta vez fué la vez que me abrió los ojos y que disfrutamos más. Debo acotar que la idea de ir esta vez se la debo a Laura y su blog, LA Story, siempre me da tantas ideas de que hacer con Adrian aquí en Los Angeles.

Tienen un programa para los niños desde bebesitos hasta los 18 años, donde ellos pueden entrar gratis con un representante también gratis, se llama NexGen. Que Maravilla!! Esto no los sabía y es que a mi me ha costado mucho acercarme a las artes aquí en este país debido a los precios y a tanto que hay de donde escojer.

Si, parece mentira, y además esto me trae muchos recuerdos de mi país y de la manera en que mi mamá nos acercó a las artes y cultura -Y eso me influenció mucho en mi carrera de diseñadora ;)-

Mi mamá nos llevaba casi todos los fines de semana al museo, allí veíamos arte de todo tipo. Hay un área en Caracas donde están casi todos los museos: el de Arte Contemporáneo, el de Ciencias Naturales, la Galería de Arte Nacional, el museo de Bellas Artes y el Museo de los Niños, conjuntamente con varios Teatros donde presentan obras de teatro infantil y conciertos de música clásica, latina, rock, etc.

Imagínense la cantidad de actividades que habían a la mano, recuerdos muy muy chéveres, un gran parque (El parque Los Caobos) donde también paseábamos y comprábamos merienditas, donde muchas veces habían artistas haciendo espectáculos impresionantes allí en pleno parque.

En fín! Que recuerdos!
Ahora si continúo con mi relato del presente: Este día que fuimos al museo de aquí de Los Angeles, la pasamos excelente casi como mis tiempos, ja ja!



We recently went to LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). We had been there before but this time was a really great eye-opening experience. I must say, we went thanks to Laura and her blog, LA Story, which always gives great recommendations on what to around LA.

They have a program for kids called NexGen where they can go in free to all the exhibits with an accompanying adult. Isn't this GREAT!?? I didn't know about this, I've had a little hard time getting close to the arts here in this country consider what I use to do in Venezuela, I think partly because of the money and the overwhelming so-many-places to go.

Visits to the museum bring back old memories of my childhood in Venezuela and the way my mom taught us about culture and arts -And this totally influenced my Graphic Design carreer ;)-

My mom took us almost every weekend to the museum, we saw all kinds of exhibits. There is an area in Caracas where there are lots of Museums together: the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Natural Histoy Museum, the National Art Gallery, the Fine Arts Museum and the Children's Museum. There where also several theaters where we saw children's plays and classical or contemporary music concerts.

Imagine the amount of activities that where on hand, really great memories, a big big park (Los Caobos) where we just walked or ran, we ate lots of yummy snacks that the street vendors always had and there where plenty of street performers with great shows.

Ok, lets get back to the present, when we went to LACMA we did have a great time just like in my times! ha ha ha!





Estuvimos un buen tiempo haciendo manualidades, y es que todos los fines de semana tienen una actividad para los niños, esta vez era basada en las esculturas que estaban mostrando ese día. Adrian no se quería ir de ahí, nos quedamos hasta que se terminó la actividad.

For a while we did some crafting, they usually have these type of activities during the weekends free for the kids, and they are all based in one of the artists that are exhibiting. Adrian did not want to leave, of course we stayed there making stuff until it was time for them to finish.



No entramos a ninguna exposición pero paseamos mucho por los jardines donde habían unas esculturas muy chéveres. Adrian estuvo fascinado porsupuesto. Y por último nos sentamos a comer una merindita estilo pic-nic, que divino!

Technically we didn't go to any exhibit but we walked a lot around the gardens where there were some really cool temporary sculptures. Adrian was fascinated, he was able to walk in them and play. At the end we enjoyed with a little improvised pic-nic, very lovely!









Les recomiendo que si viven cerca no pierdan la oportunidad de ir a LACMA con sus niños, les enriquecerá mucho! Y no importa en que parte del mundo estés, el arte es algo que los niños deben de tener cerca, les aseguro que encontrarán un museo que ofrezca programas especiales para los niños, vayan, disfruten mucho y cuéntenme plis!

I really recommend going to LACMA with your kids if you live close by, they will absorb so much! It doesn't matter in what part of the world you are, art is something the kids should always have close, I assure you will find a museum that offers some kind of special program for kids, go, enjoy and tell please!!

Feliz Día del Padre!

From the day Adrian was born, his daddy has been there with him, guiding him, entertaining him and teaching him. What I like best is how he gets excited when we plan an outing with Adrian.



Nowadays fathers have a different role than in other times when being a father was mostly to provide for the family and it didn't mean to be in direct contact wiht milk bottles, diapers or discipline, don't you think?



Well, I love the times we are living because without Derek's help and partnership I don't know what I would have done in many cases! He enjoys to be a father more and more everyday, now, Adrian and him are like 2 rascals planning there next adventure, I love the relationship they have.



Thanks Baby for being there always. You are a great Father, I love you!

Ah, and for the grandparents who are also Fathers, have a great day, we love you! Here are some pictures of them.



Desde que Adrian nació su papá ha estado siempre ahí con él acompañándolo, guiándolo, divirtiéndolo y enseñándole. Lo que más me gusta es como se emociona cuando planeamos alguna aventura con Adrian.



Los padres hoy en día llevan una tarea mucho más distinta a tiempos atrás cuando lo que signifiaba ser padres era proveer parea la familia y no estar en contacto directo con los teteros, pañales o lecciones al niño, nos les parece?




Pues, a mi me encantan estos tiempos porque sin él no se ómo hubiera hecho en muchos casos!! Derek cada día disfruta más de ser papá, ahora son como unos compinches, a el y Adrian y les encanta planear juegos, me gusta mucho la relación que tienen!



Gracias Baby por estar allí siempre, feliz día, te quiero mucho!!

Potty Training

I really thought I was ready, I thought Adrian was ready, and I did think this was easier for some weird reason.

I've been dreading this for a while, I don't even want to think about it, but little by little some friends told me about the their experiences and how they did it: -You just take away the diaper and let him wear underwear, he wont like how it feels and soon he'll want to go to the toilet, he'll have accidents and you have to change clothes a lot but it's worth it.

Ok, so I got him some Mickey underwear and we where all really excited to start this. Well, it only lasted for a night and a little bit of the morning... He peed and pooed several times in his undies and he didn't want us to change him or take him to the potty. We took him right after lunch and sat him on the potty for example and he didn't go, but then right after leaving the toilet, he goes!

He has been in the potty before, don't think we just did it out of the blue, but this time he was not happy and would scream sometimes.

So I did what I always do, research, and I read about the signs kids should have when they are ready and Adrian doesn't seem to have those signs, at least not most of them. So I confess I just quit right away because basically, I'm not ready either.

But my other half tells me that if you are patient enough and teach him, he'll learn! He's always like this, look at the Spanish, look at the sleeping routine, kids are smart and if you hang in there with them, they'll do it! So, what should we do?? I feel that I just don't have the patience required for this task yet!?



I would love advice though, I will try to ask everybody I know with a potty trained kid, I feel that the more information I have, the more I can get it all together and recognize when should I try this again. Thing is, I do want to stop buying so many diapers... please Adrian, please!!!

De verdad que yo creía que estaba lista y que Adrian también, y por alguna razón pensé que esto era fácil. Por cierto, cómo se dice "Potty training" en Español? Entrenamiento de hacer del baño? Nose!

Estaba dejándolo para después todo el tiempo, ni siquiera quería pensar ni investigar este tema mucho, pero entonces algunas amigas me han contado de sus experiencias y de como lo hicieron: -Tu simplemente le quitas el pañal y le pones sus interiores, no le gustará cuando se sienta mojado y después de unas cuantas veces entenderá que necesita ir a la poceta. Tendrá muchos accidentes y le tendrás que cambiar la ropa muchísimas veces pero pronto te darás cuenta que será una maravilla.




Entonces le compramos unos interiorcitos de Mickey y todos estábamos emocionados de empezar esto. Bueno, nos duró una noche y un poquitico de la mañana siguiente... Se hizo pupú y pipí a cada rato en la ropa y no le importaba, hasta negaba que tenía nada, no quería que lo cambiara ni quería ir a la poceta.

Lo llevamos a la poceta varias veces justo después de comer por ejemplo y no hacía nada pero inmediatamente después de pararse iba al otro cuarto y se hacía en la ropa!

Ya lo habíamos llevado a la poceta antes de empezar esto muchas veces y a el le gustaba, no fué que lo llevamos derepente pero ahora lo que hacía era gritar y patalear!

Y entonces decistí y me puse a investigar y a leer como siempre, leí que acerca de las señales que indican que los niños están listos para entrenar y Adrian como que no tiene muchas de esas señales. Me desesperé y ahora siento que ni el ni yo estamos listos.



Pero por otro lado hay una voz que me dice que si tengo la paciencia suficiente y le enseño, el va a aprender. El siempre ha aprendido muy bien, mira por ejemplo el Español y la rutina de ir a dormir, los niños son muy inteligentes y si uno se aplica y los enseña con paciencia, ellos lo aprenden, no?? Pero entonces que hacemos? No se a cual de las voces hacerle caso! Como que no tngo la paciencia suficiente para este entrenamiento aún.

Me encantaría escuchar consejos, le voy a preguntar a todas las personas que sepa que han entrenado a sus hijos y siento que mientras mas información tenga podré armarme mejor y reconocer en que momento empezar esto de nuevo. De verdad que ya no quiero comprar tantos pañales, porfa Adri, porfa!!

El Español -Parte 2-

Se acuerdan de este post? Donde les conté lo emocionada que estoy de enseñarle a Adrian el español y como me ha funcionado. Pues bien, hoy les quiero seguir contanto de detallitos y tips que he aprendido en estos humildes mecesitos con mi experiencia.

• Lo primero que empezé a hacer al hablarle español fué traducir lo que el me decía en inglés pero leí que no es bueno porque ellos se acostumbran (lo leí aquí) y decidí hacer lo que recomiendan: no hacerle caso si me habla en inglés. Y FUNCIONÓ!! A veces me quedo callada y a veces le digo: -Dime en español que no te entiendo, y el me decía al principio: -Español? -No te entiendo? y no sabía mucho sino repetir pero fué agarrando la onda bien rápido hasta que ahora me dice la oración español o spanglish, pero trata de meterle lo más que pueda en español, es impresionante!

• Como algunos saben, mi mamá vive con nosotros. Usualmente ella le hablaba español y/o inglés, dependiendo del momento, y acordamos en que mi mamá nada mas le hable español, y ya están acostumbrados los dos y eso le ayuda muchísimo a Adrian porque es más constante.

• Descubrí la programación en español para niños de la tele! Que horror, me di cuenta que ni sabía donde estaban los canales infantiles en español, pero desde aquel momento en que tomé la desición, cuando le prendo la tele es puro español! Y ha aprendido a gustarle otros shows que antes no veía como Pocoyó, Mister Maker, Hi5, Bigfoot, etc todos estos los pasan en V-Me o en Discovery Kids en español. Lo único malo son los comerciales (no hay nada como Disney, no tienen comerciales fastidiosos!) pero le ayudan mucho porque me doy cuenta que refuerzan lo que yo le hablo.

• Cuando estamos en el carro siempre hago el esfuerzo de ponerle radio en español, sin importar si a mi me gusta en ese momento! Y también le pongo mi ipod on música en español. Lo que más le gusta es Juanes ;)

• Esto es parte de la vida diaria pero me encanta hacerlo porque el disfruta mucho: Cuando vamos al automercado y compro frutas y verduras el le fascina ayudarme a escojer y ponerlas en las bolsas y yo le voy haciendo como un examen, le digo: -Donde están los tomates? -Y como se llama esta? -Y de que color es? -Vamos a contar los limones. Ya ha aprendido casi todo lo que compro!

• Trato de reunirme con amig@s latinos mas a menudo y de que el también tenga sus amiguitos con los que hable español y se de cuenta que el no es el único! Nos encontramos con Ana de Spanglish Baby y a su bella Camila en un playdate con otra muchacha latina Belén y su hija Emma, la pasamos divino y nos seguiremos viendo a menudo. Se que eso le ayudará mucho!

Han pasado muchos anécdotas cómicos con su aprendizaje, como por ejemplo mi hermana me comenta el otro día que Adrian estaba hablando muchísimo español, y el estaba allí y le dijo mi hermana: -Verdad Adrian? Hablas mucho español!! Adrian: -Español? No entiendo!!? Ja ja ja, muy cómico!

Ya muchas veces nos ha pasado que el mismo traduce las palabras a la gente, si yo le digo algo en español, el se lo dice en inglés a otra persona que no entienda o viceversa. Impresionante para nosotros pero así es! Que maravilla!

Ah, y esto no termina aquí! Pronto les contaré otra actividad que estamos haciendo para ayudarle a Adrian con el español.

Do you remember this post? Where I told you how excited I was to start teaching more Spanish to Adrian and how it has worked? So, well today I want to let you know a little bit mroe of the tips I've been learning and implementing in these couple of months.

• First thing I started doing was to translate whatever he said to me in English but then I read this that siad it's no helpful to them so I decided not to pay attention if he speaks to me in English... and IT WORKED! Sometimes I just don't answer but sometimes I say can you repeat it in Spanish please, I don't understand. And at the beginning he would say: -Don't understand? Spanish? he wouldn't know but to repeat whatever I said but then he started understanding pretty quickly and he does repeat the phrase in Spanish or Spanglish, with the most Spanish he can say, it's amazing!

• As most of you know, my mom lives with us. She used to speak Spanish or/and English to Adrian, whatever was easier at a given moment, so we decided that my mom only speaks to him in Spanish too and now they are both used to it. This is soo helpful for him because it's another constant Spanish speaking person at home.

• I discovered the Spanish Kid's programing in the TV! I didn't even know in which channels they where!! But now whenever i turn the TV on for him, it's in Spanish. And he has learned to love lots of the new shows he watches there like Pocoyó, Mister Maker, Hi5, Bigfoot, and so on. All these shows are in V-Me and in Discovery Kids Español. Only thing is the ads are awful (nothing like Disney I must say, no boring commercials!) but the shows help hi so much since they re-enforce the language of course.

• When we are traveling in the car I always make the effort to tune in Spanish speaking radio, even if sometimes I don't like what they are playing ;) And I also play Ipod with songs in Spanish, What he likes best is Juanes :)

• The following is part of the day-to-day but I love to do it and it helps a lot: When we go grocery shopping he loves to help me pick the fruits and vegetables and place the in the little bags and I go thru all the names kind of like a test, I say: -Where are the tomatoes? -And what's this one's name? -What color is it? -Let's count the limes. He has learned almost all teh names of the items we shop for!

• I try to get together with latin friends more often and that he also has his friends that he can speak Spanish with so that he realizes that he is not the only one (which is not hard here isn LA, I'm thankful!) We met Ana from Spanglish Baby and her beautiful Camila and another girls named Belen and her daughter Emma, we all had a wonderful time and we'll suremeet often. This will help a lot!
  

There has been lots of fun moments in this experience so far, for example mi sister noticed one day how adrian was speaking more Spanish and he was there and herad it, she said: -Right Adrian? You are speaking lots of Spanish! Adrian: -Español? Don't understand! Ha ha ha! We laughed so much!

He also translates lots of times to others that don't speak the language, when he decides to tranlate by himself, is amazing!

Ooh, and this doesn't end here! I will talk about another activity we've been doing to help Adrian with his Spanish even more!

Cheerios con Juan Soler?

Una de las cosas que me fascinan de vivir aquí en Los Angeles es el poder asistir a eventos tan chéveres.

El otro día tuve el placer de conocer y de estar cerquita de un actor latino muy conocido. Juan Soler y además de eso conocí a otras mamás latinas y blogueras en persona!!

Resulta que Juan Soler está apoyando una campaña de Honey Nut Cheerios que es un cereal saludable para el corazón que puede ayudar a reducir el colesterol. Y ese día fué la entrega del premio de un concurso que hicieron donde la ganadora también tuvo la oportunidad de conocerlo en persona.

Yo soy un poco tímida para esas cosas y lo escuché hablando pero no conversé directamente con él. Pero me pareció un tipo bien sencillo y buena onda, me parece bien que apoye a campañas como esta y no a refrescos o papitas fritas, cosa que no nos ayudan!!

Tuve el placer de conocer a Ana de Spanglish Baby, a Silvia de Mamá Latina Tips y a Marcela de 8 year olds and Babies.





Nos regalaron un potecito para meter los cheerios chverísimo! A Adrian le fascinan porsupueto y uno le pone la leche abajo y luego lo desenrozcas y sirves la leche en el momento que te lo comes.

Cheerios gave us a little plastic container to take them to go. Adrian loves them and loves to use this, you place the milk in the bottom by itself and then open it up at the moment and serve the milk so they wont get soggy, it even comes with a spoon!

One of the reasons I love to live In LA is to able to assist to fun events.

The other day I had the pleasure of meeting a latin famous actor Juan Soler up close and I also met with latin mom bloggers too!

Juan Soler is supporting a Honey Nut Cheerios campaign that as you know is a heart-healthy cereal that tastes great and can help lower cholesterol. And that day was the day when the winner of a Honey Nut Cheerios contest got to meet him in person too.

I am a shy person for these kind of things so I didn't talk to him directly but I did listen to what he had to say. My opinion is that he is a down to earth father and guy. And it is nice that he is supporting campaigns like this and not sodas and chips, which don't help us at all.
